EAZA Madagascar Campaign

The EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquaria) has once again called out a new Europe-wide campaign titled "Madagascar." In the framework of this campaign, Schönbrunn Zoo has set up a comprehensive exhibition (in German and English), which will also be presented in the OZO institutions (Österreichische Zoo Organisation.) This special exhibition is also available to all interested EAZA zoos in digital form.

Madagascar-a natural jewel in the Indian Ocean-lies 400 km off the east coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean and measures nearly 590,000 km². About 165 million years ago, Madagascar separated from Africa; the split from the Indian subcontinent took place about 70 million years ago. This long geographic isolation has led to a truly unique fauna and flora.

Madagascar, "island of the lemurs," is the fourth largest island in the world and has an unprecedented fauna and flora. Among the ca. 117 described mammal species alone, 90% are endemic (i.e. live exclusively on Madagascar!) The island’s habitat diversity, from rainforest to bush land, and its incredible species diversity are truly impressive. This campaign is designed to inform a broad audience about the threats to the island’s biodiversity-and the many conservation efforts there.

Madagascar is one of the world’s 25 designated “hotspots”. These are areas that are particularly rich in endemic species and that are threatened by human activities.

The main campaign goals are:

  • information about the unique status of the fauna and flora
  • information about the chief threats
  • collection of donations for conservation projects
  • promotion of long-term cooperation between EAZA members and National Parks and other protected areas
  • promotion of eco-tourism on Madagascar

In addition, we are undertaking a major fund-raising campaign under the code name “Madagascar”.

HOW ARE YOUR DONATIONS USED?

The donations are used to support 20 different projects selected by the EAZA. The funds are spent according to the specific needs of the individual projects. The EAZA Madagascar Campaign is an important step forward in preserving the unique biodiversity on this special island.

Please help us to preserve Madagascar’s biodiversity!

The campaign at Schönbrunn Zoo

The campaign at the Schönbrunn Zoo will last to October 2007. As in previous years, Schönbrunn Zoo will once again provide the full information on the exhibition to all interested EAZA institutions in digital form. Each poster, available in English and German can be used "as is" by our partner zoos, who can print them in any size they wish (max. DIN A O.) For more information, contact: g.schwammer@zoovienna.at

In Schönbrunn Zoo, the exhibition will be complemented by a wide range of "Zoo Aktiv" events dealing with Madagascar.
