Jone Porter completed her Bachelor of Science with Honors in Biological Sciences at the University Natal, Durban with a Higher Diploma in Education. Then she taught Biology and General Science at the John Ross High in Richards Bay for two years. In 1986 Jone joined the KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife, where she did Environmental Education and Community Development work in communities surrounding protected areas at St. Lucia and then at Sodwana Bay/Kosi. In 2001 Jone moved back to Durban and coordinated the Environmental Education and Community Development work in the Coastal Region from Port Edwart to Kosi Bay. And in the beginning of 2004 she joined the South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR) as Director of Education.
