Gaby V. Schwammer is the Head of the Zoo Education Department at Vienna Zoo since 1983. During all the years the aim of her zoo education activities has been to promote nature conservation and to heighten awareness for environmental issues. Since its inception in 1976, the Zoo Education Department in Vienna has made a concerted effort to provide a comprehensive program of activities for visitors of all ages.
Between 1978 – 1983, during her zoological and botanical study at the Vienna University Gaby was assistant at the Vienna Nature History Museum and at the State Institute for Scientific Motion Pictures. She participated in international eco-ethological projects and between 1985 – 1989 supervised the external scientific department of the Vienna University at Krk/Croatia. Between 1986 - 1993 she was a teacher at the state institute for professional training of animal keepers.
Between 1994 - 1998 she was already a member of the IZE Executive Committee as IZE Secretary and 2002 she organized as hosted the 16th IZE Conference in Vienna.
The Zoo Education Department of the Vienna Zoo is in charge of all educational issues, the Zoo library, the scientific collections, the zoo-archives, labels & signs, exhibitions and volunteer training system.
One of her main tasks is to produce the zoo guidebooks, a variety of zoo-leaflets, posters, and last, but not least, to edit the Zoo Magazine (Schoenbrunner Tiergarten Journal ISSN 1025-7314) and the Elephant Journal of EEKMA European Elephant and Manager Association(ISSN 1561-4670 German & ISBN 1561-4662 English).
Gaby is a board member of the Education and Exhibit Design Committee of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) and is networking in very close cooperation with many other national and international institutions on many seminars, workshops and lectures worldwide. |
