Latin American Regional Update
By Regional Representative Carmen Linares
Our work in the last 6 months has been focused on spreading awareness of the IZE Association and also assessing the needs of Latin America zoo educators so that we can assist them in the future.
We have been spreading awareness of IZE by:
- Translating the IZE website into Spanish. This is a collaborative effort with Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
- Designing and distribution of a Spanish language flyer to different zoos in Latin America (page 1 of flyer, page 2 of flyer)

- Presenting at the XIV Congress of the Latin-American Zoos and Aquariums Association (ALPZA) and in the XXXI Congress of the Brazilian Zoos and Aquariums Association. Here I shared the objectives, benefits and scope of IZE and invited zoo and aquarium educators to the 19th Biennial IZE Conference in Adelaide, Australia to which people showed interest in attending.
The needs assessment of Latin America zoo educators showed that the greatest need was evaluating the efficacy and acceptance of zoo and aquarium educational programs. Currently, I am contacting zoos in Central America to assess their needs.
Along with representing IZE, I am currently part of the Latin-American Zoos and Aquariums Association (ALPZA) education commission. Together with ALPZA, we are working on developing a Latin American focused educational campaign for the WAZA/CBSG “Year of the Frog” campaign.
